Pikes Peak stands at 14,115 feet and is one of Colorado's most famous fourteeners. Known as "America's Mountain," this iconic summit inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write "America the Beautiful" after her visit in 1893. The Outrider Hotel in Manitou Springs sits at the mountain's base, making it the ideal home base for your Pikes Peak adventure.
Whether you choose to drive the scenic Pikes Peak Highway, ride the historic Broadmoor Pikes Peak Cog Railway, or tackle the challenging Barr Trail on foot, reaching the summit delivers one of Colorado's most rewarding experiences. On a clear day, views stretch across five states and over 100 miles in every direction.
The mountain passes through five distinct life zones as you ascend — from plains grassland through montane forest, subalpine woodland, and finally the treeless alpine tundra above 11,500 feet. This dramatic ecological transition makes the journey to the summit a fascinating natural experience regardless of how you travel.
