Cave of the Winds Mountain Park offers a rare chance to explore Colorado's underground geology. Located just a 7-minute drive (2.8 miles) from The Outrider Hotel in Manitou Springs, this attraction combines guided cave tours with above-ground adventure activities set against a dramatic Williams Canyon backdrop.
The cave entrance was first noted by Arthur Love in 1869, but the cave itself was explored and opened to the public by brothers John and George Pickett along with Reverend Roselle T. Cross in 1880. Apache and Ute tribes had long known of the cave's existence. Today, Cave of the Winds protects a complex network of underground chambers adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, and other formations that have been growing slowly for millions of years.
The cave maintains a constant temperature of 54°F year-round, making it an ideal destination on hot summer days or cold winter mornings. Multiple tour options let you choose your level of adventure — from the well-lit Discovery Tour to the atmospheric Lantern Tour by candlelight, plus an Expedition Tour for those who want true hands-on caving.
Take the Discovery Tour (45 minutes) through well-lit chambers with spectacular formations
Experience the Lantern Tour (90 minutes) through undeveloped cave sections by lantern light
Ride the Terror-Dactyl, a thrilling swing ride with panoramic Williams Canyon views
